National Electra - San Diego
Seen about to depart for Los Angeles late in the day, National's Lockheed 188A Electra N5009K had the honor of operating the airline's first service to San Diego, on June 11, 1961. After protracted hearings, the southern transcontinental route awards went to National and Delta, giving both carriers authority to the West Coast, which ended the American-Delta-National interchange service. While most of National's new flights began with DC-8s, Electras were initially assigned to the Houston-San Diego-Los Angeles route.
